Australia Denounces Israel's Air Attack on Hamas Officials in Qatar
Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed her government's disapproval on Wednesday, calling the attack a "wrong thing to do." Speaking to an Australian broadcasting agency, Wong warned that the strike, which targeted a building used by Hamas leaders, could jeopardize ongoing efforts to mediate a ceasefire.
"Qatar has been one of the parties seeking to mediate a ceasefire," Wong said, adding that the airstrike violated Qatar's sovereignty and could escalate tensions further. "This is a violation of Qatar's sovereignty. It perils that work on the ceasefire, and it risks escalation," she added.
When questioned on whether Australia would take stronger actions against Israel, Wong clarified that while the country had limited capacity to influence the conflict, it would persist in advocating for a ceasefire. "Obviously, we're not the central player, but we can work with others to try to do what we are able to do to end the suffering in Gaza, and to support a ceasefire and a pathway to peace," Wong stated.
Earlier, Assistant Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Matt Thistlethwaite described it as "encouraging" to hear Qatari leaders reaffirm their commitment to facilitating a ceasefire agreement during an interview on a radio.
The Australian government’s condemnation highlights growing international concern over the escalating violence and the fragile peace efforts in the region.
